Young Iranian athletes manage to clinch a total of 15 medals at the 28th edition of Universiade in South Korea’s Gwangju, thanks to their most awe-inspiring and spectacular performances ever at the international sports event.
On Tuesday and the final day of the tournament, Iran landed in the ninth place with seven gold, two silver and six bronze medals, and its medal tally showed a great improvement compared to the previous edition of the Summer Universiade games staged between July 6 to July 17, 2013 in the Russian city of Kazan.
Iranian athletes pocketed nine medals (one gold, five silver and three bronze medals) at the 2013 Summer Universiade to land the Islamic Republic in the 32nd spot.
In the 2015 Universiade competitions, Iran’s 19-year-old prodigy Najmeh Khedmati and Mahlagha Jambozorg, 23, were awarded a shooting gold medal each.
Ahmad Khosrowfar, Saeed Rajabi, Omid Amidi and Akram Khodabandeh also received gold medals in taekwondo.
The Iranian squad, consisting of Maryam Talebi, Khedmati and Jambozorg, collected 1,740 total points in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions team competitions to finish runner-up and win a silver medal.
Iranian taekwondo fighter Mahdi Jamali Fashi also conceded defeat to his South Korean opponent Bae Jongbeom in the final contest of the men's individual poomsae and received silver.
Khedmati (shooting), Khdemati, Jambozorg and Talebi (shooting team), Khdemati, Jambozorg and Aminzadeh (shooting team), Mehran Askari (taekwondo), Javad Amiri (taekwondo), Bahareh Ghaderian, Fatemeh Ghasemi and Marjan Salahshour (poomsae team) also snatched Iran’s bronze medals.
The 2015 Summer Universiade opened in Gwangju on July 3, and ran until July 14.
Iranian athletes were in action across eight sports.
In terms of medal distribution table, South Korea stood atop with 108 medals (47 gold medals). It was followed by Russia, which garnered 122 medals, 34 of them gold. China ranked third, having won 34 gold medals out of a total of 72.
