Over 1mn vulnerable pensioners without state care

A newly-published report by a British charity has revealed that more than one million British pensioners are struggling at home alone without proper social care.

A newly-published report by a British charity has revealed that more than one million British pensioners are struggling at home alone without proper social care.

According to the report by Age UK, these vulnerable people have trouble washing, dressing and getting out of bed and are in urgent need of assistance.

“Not only are they without help from the social care system, they are also not getting it from family, friends or neighbours either,” said director of Age UK, Caroline Abrahams.

Looming Crisis

Meanwhile, a London-based commentator has warned that the situation will deteriorate in years to come because of lack of resources.”

“There is a huge lack of resources to help elderly people… Many people who look after the elderly people, cannot cope with the huge demand of the elderly people… The situation is getting worse because there is shortage of resources to help them,” Javier Farje told Press TV’s UK Desk on Wednesday.

He also predicted that the worsening situation of the elderly people will take a heavy toll on the NHS, which is already reeling from lack of resources.

“By the year 2020, 7.9 million elderly people will live in Briton… Because of this lack of care, the demand of medical services is higher, because many people end up in hospital, because they don’t have the care they need to be looked after which means that the National Health Service which has been suffering a huge demand and shortage of money will be overwhelmed even more by having to look after older people,” he concluded.

Last year, a study by Nuffield Trust and Health Foundation think tanks disclosed that hundreds of thousands of older people in Britain have been left without state-funded social care in the past several years as a result of council budget cuts and rationed services.
