A powerful explosion has rocked a Swiss-owned weapons factory in Montenegro, killing at least one person and injuring seven others, security sources say.

The explosion hit the factory, owned by Swiss businessman, Heinrich Thomet, in the northern town of Mojkovac at about 7:15 a.m. local time  (0515 GMT) on Sunday.

It is the third such blast to hit the Tara Aerospace and Defense Products factory since early 2014. At least seven people were severely injured in the two previous explosions.

An investigation is under way into the fatal incident.

Inspectors earlier found that rules and regulations for workers' protection had not been respected at the factory.

The facility sells military equipment to clients in the the United States, Canada, the European Union, and the Balkans region. It also produces guns and rifles as well as weaponry for police forces.
