The outbreak of MERS in South Korea started on May 20 when a 68-year-old man was diagnosed with the disease. He had returned from a trip to Saudi Arabia.

The killer virus has since then spread at a fast pace, leading to the temporary closure of thousands of schools in South Korea.

MERS was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012. The disease is part of the corona virus family, which includes the common cold and SARS. It can cause, symptoms including fever, breathing problems, pneumonia and kidney failure.

The vast majority of MERS infections and deaths have been reported in Saudi Arabia, where more than 950 people have been infected and 412 have died from the illness.
