US concerned about China’s rising power in Asia: Beeman

Washington’s concern is that China is taking over its influence in Asia, Beeman stated.

The United States is concerned that China is taking over its influence in the Asia-Pacific region, says political analyst William Beeman.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced plans to deploy weapons, including the Zumwalt, the newest stealth destroyer, in Asia.

The 610-foot-long Zumwalt named after the late Admiral Elmo “Bud” Zumwalt Jr will have nearly 10 times more available power than its predecessors.

“The United States is deploying advanced weapons near China partly in concern for China’s actions in the South China Sea,” Beeman told Press TV on Monday.

“There are a large number of very small islands in the South China Sea that are in the area of Indonesia and also the Philippines and China is asserting its sovereignty over this region and its interest in expanding its influence in this region,” he said.

Washington is mounting pressure on China after Beijing decided to build artificial islands in the South China Sea. China has warned that coming too close to the islands would be provocative.

“The US has expressed concerns about this as has other nations within the region; China is claiming that it has historical relations in the South China Sea,” Beeman said.

“The United States is also concerned by the fact that China now has an interest in trying to become a more prominent international power in the region and elsewhere.”

“Up until now, China has been concerned largely with its internal economy and has carried out trade with other nations in Africa, in Asia but it hasn’t really been a strong political power and now the concern is that it’s becoming a strong political power as well or trying to become one,” he noted.

“So, this is one of the situations where the United States has always had an interest in southeast Asia and their concern (is that) china is taking over the influence of the United States and other Western nations in the region,” he concluded.
