A female US tourist has been mauled to death and her male companion injured by a lion during a safari in a park outside the South African city of Johannesburg.

The incident occurred on Monday when a female lion jumped through the open window of the couple’s vehicle and began mauling the woman, according to local press accounts citing park authorities.

The victim’s partner was wounded by the lioness while attempting to fight off the animal. He was transferred to hospital for treatment and is expected to survive since his injuries are reportedly not life-threatening.

The two US tourists were on a self-drive tour of the Lion Park, a major international tourist attraction, when the lion lunged through the opened windows of their vehicle. The park's strict safety regulations ban visitors from opening the windows of their vehicles near wild animals.

According to the park’s Assistance Manager Scott Simpson, similar incidents have previously occurred on the site, all stemming from open windows.

"That's absolutely forbidden at our park," Simpson emphasized. "There are numerous signs, and we hand out slips of paper to all guests warning them to keep their windows closed."

The park is a popular wildlife center in South Africa's Gauteng province, boasting a variety of wild animals, including lions, zebras, giraffes, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas.
