The chairman of Russia’s State Duma committee on international affairs, Alexei Pushkov, says a final nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 countries will be the most effective way to prevent a possible military conflict in the region.
"It's the most effective way to reduce a military threat and prevent a possible military conflict, because you know that the United States and Israel have political forces that have spoken and continue to speak for a military solution," Pushkov told reporters on Monday after a meeting with Chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Alaeddin Boroujerdi in Moscow.
Pushkov added that another military confrontation in the already volatile Middle and Near East would turn it into a region of total military chaos, Interfax reported.
"No one is interested in it, at least the reasonable forces are not interested in it, and Russia is extremely not interested in it," the Russian official said.
He emphasized that not only the executive administration and the State Duma but also public opinion in Russia is “very positive about the prospects of” a final agreement between Iran and the six global powers.
Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the US, Britain, France, Russia and China -- plus Germany reached a mutual understanding on Tehran’s nuclear program after eight days of marathon talks in Switzerland on April 2.
The two sides will now work on drawing up a final accord by the self-designated June 30 deadline.
