Britain likes to promote its elections as a “festival of democracy,” where anybody can make their voice heard and elect whom they please; but is this really the case?
First of all, the voting system is inherently flawed and favors the established parties such as the Conservatives and Labor. The number of votes cast for these parties is always way below their inflated representation in parliament due to the way the electoral system operates.
Secondly, the major political parties are all funded by major business interests that effectively give money to them so that they will represent their interests when they are in power.
Thirdly, the British media, which shout from the rooftops that they are independent and balanced, always take very partisan positions in a general election campaign, effectively acting as the spokespeople for the established parties and therefore narrowing the choice for voters.
All of the above means that more and more British people are simply deciding not to vote, especially young people who are turned off by mainstream politics and media and disgusted by their bias and corruption.
