Lebanon’s army soldiers have reportedly driven back the ISIL Takfiri terrorists from two hilltop positions on the northeastern border with Syria, confiscating explosive materials.

Bodies of three suspected ISIL terrorists were discovered by the Lebanese troops after they captured militant positions on the outskirts of Ras Baalbek, the Beirut-based Daily Star reported Thursday, citing a security source.

According to the source, most of the Syria-based terrorists, believed to be linked to ISIL, retreated following the army offensive that was backed by artillery shelling.

The source further described the assault as a preemptive attack that was carried out after the Lebanese soldiers fortified fixed positions along the Syrian border.

Meanwhile, a military statement released on Thursday also said the “swift operation was a preemptive attack aimed at preventing terrorist groups” from infiltrating Lebanon and attacking citizens.

According to the statement, a “number of explosive devices, medium and light weapons and ammunition, as well as military equipment belonging to the terrorists” were captured in the course of the offensive.

The Lebanese army statement further elaborated that the offensive inflicted losses on the terror elements, but noted that there were no Lebanese casualties.

It added that the soldiers managed to “wrest full control” of the hilltop positions of Sadr al-Jarash and Harf al-Jarash, northeast of Talet al-Hamra on the outskirts of Ras Baalbek.

Last month, Lebanon’s army maintained a near-daily pattern of attacking militant positions on Ras Baalbek outskirts for about 10-15 minutes every few hours in an effort to deter new potential attacks.

The offensives were launched after eight Lebanese soldiers were killed and 22 others were wounded in heavy fighting with ISIL terrorists on the outer edge of Ras Baalbek on January 26.
