Afghan Taliban to meet US officials for talks in Qatar

Sources within the Taliban say the Afghan militant group is set to hold a round of peace talks with US officials in Qatar.

A senior Taliban member said the two-day talks will continue until Friday. American and Qatari officials have not commented on the issue yet. Meanwhile, sources inside the Pakistani army say the Taliban have also signaled willingness to open peace talks with the Afghan government in March. This, as previous efforts to end the violence have not been successful. The US and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror. The military offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity still lingers on unabated across the country.
