France’s Opera Comique is holding a rare exhibition of objects that have been used on stage for the past three centuries. The institution was officially set up in 1714, way before the French Revolution.
Some of the biggest music composers have contributed to its repertoire which is said to be the most creative in Europe.
In its 300th year of existence, the Opera Comique is a worshipped institution in France. But, for the first hundred years, it faced stiff competition from other operas at a time when Paris was seeing a surge in classical stage performance.
That’s because it was an art the ordinary French enjoyed as much as the bourgeoisie. It made the audience weep and laugh.
These costumes have survived two massive fires and centuries of poor conservation.
France Opera Comique was the first in Europe to have electricity in 1898. It’s important to remind that Carmen, the world’s most played Opera, was also created here.
