Bahraini protesters have held demonstrations in support of Sheikh Ali Salman, the detained secretary general of the main opposition party, al-Wefaq.
Demonstrators took to the streets of the town of Bilad al-Qadeem, west of the capital, Manama, the island of Sitra, the village of al-Qadam and a number of other villages on Wednesday to denounce the detention of Salman, according to al-Wefaq online news.
The protesters chanted slogans demanding the release of the prominent opposition figure.
In Sheikh Salman’s hometown of Bilad al-Qadeem, regime forces dispersed demonstrators with tear gas.
The uprising in Bahrain started in early 2011. The Manama regime has used heavy-handed measures to crush the peaceful protests.
A number of UN experts recently urged Bahraini authorities to release all prisoners of conscious, including Salman, expressing concern over the daily crackdown.
Bahrainis are preparing to mark February 14, the fourth anniversary of the popular uprising.
