Since December 2013, South Sudan has experienced deadly clashes between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and rebels led by his former deputy Riek Machar. Peace talks that have lasted as long have failed to put an end to the violence.

The intergovernmental Authority for Development that is brokering the peace talks between South Sudan’s warring sides has set a March 5 deadline for them to sign a comprehensive peace deal.

President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar have signed an agreement to this effect.

The warring parties have been stuck on the issue of transition of power and structure of a new government. The recent agreement they have signed follows a proposal by the IGAD summit on January 29 that reinstates Salva Kiir as president and gives rebel leader Riek Machar the post of vice president.

The IGAD summit also decided that two will hold a final meeting on February 19 to discuss the steps toward the March agreement.

With this agreement signed in the early hours of Monday, it is expected that guns will immediately go silent in South Sudan. However, it is only time that will tell if the parties will honor this agreement after violating previous ones.
