US President Donald Trump has announced new travels restrictions for arrivals from Iran amid the covid-19 epidemic.
He also advised American citizens Saturday not to travel to specific regions in Italy and South Korea in response to the coronavirus.
“Additional cases in the United States are likely, but healthy individuals should be able to fully recover,” Trump said. “If you’re healthy, you will probably go through a process and you’ll be fine.”
The US president acknowledged the first death in the United States, further insisting that there was “no reason to panic.”
“Unfortunately one person passed away overnight. She was a wonderful woman, a medically high-risk patient in her late 50s,” Trump told reporters in the White House briefing room.
He made the comments as the virus was spreading across the US amid the administration’s highly criticized response.
Trump has been accused of downplaying the threat of the virus by Democrats and some health experts.
“They have been working around the clock so hard on the coronavirus. It’s a tough one, but a lot of progress has been made,” Trump said of his team.
Concerns have grown over the past week as the virus started to spread deeper into the country.
Trump has tapped Vice President Mike Pence to lead the administration’s response to the coronavirus.
