"Faulty" global payment systems
The 15th annual summit of BRICS, a bloc of five major emerging economies, has kicked off in the South African city of Johannesburg. BRICS leaders have called for accelerating the expansion of the bloc. Xi also called for deeper cooperation to advance economic growth and promote peace. South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa said his country's stance on bloc’s expansion is similar to China's. Also, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he fully supports the group of nation's expansion. BRICS is expected to consider granting new memberships during its three-day summit. Some 40 countries including Iran have expressed interest in joining the economic bloc. The leaders of BRICS member states also called for the use of local currencies to facilitate trade and investment.
Palestinians arrested
Israeli forces have arrested 21 Palestinians in several parts of the occupied West Bank and al-Quds, including three freed detainees. The arrests took place mostly in the West Bank provinces of Tulkarm, Jenin, Nablus, Ramallah, and al-Khalil. Israeli forces carry out attacks against Palestinians in the occupied territories almost on a daily basis. The regime forces and settlers have killed some 220 Palestinians since the start of the year and arrested many others. According to the Palestinian Prisoners Society, Israel is currently holding more than 5,000 Palestinian prisoners in its jails. Nearly one fifth of them are held without charge or trial in an internationally banned procedure known as administrative detention.
Hawaii situation
Over 1,000 people are still missing, some two weeks after devastating wildfires ravaged parts of the US state of Hawaii. Authorities have put the number of missing people at around 1,100. The FBI is seeking the help of family members in identifying the remains of the dead. They have been collecting DNA samples from those who were out of the fire-ravaged Maui County. 115 people have so far been confirmed dead in the wildfires that were described as the worst in recent US history. Blazes forced harrowing escapes and displaced thousands. Officials have been criticized for failing to issue alerts and their lackluster response to the tragedy. Hawaii's attorney general has already opened an investigation into the authorities' handling of the wildfires.
