Saffron industry

Ninety-four percent of the world’s saffron is produced in Iran according to Iran’s deputy of Customs Administration.

Also, 95% of saffron produced in Iran comes from two provinces of the Khorasan region to the east of the country.

It might be interesting to know that the price of one kilogram of saffron is comparable to the price of a kilogram of gold. That’s why saffron has been called red gold.

Saffron is considered a strategic industry which has generated a lot of foreign revenue for Iran. Last year Iran produced around over 400 tonnes of saffron.

Latest data from Iran’s Customs Administration shows that Iran exported nearly 280 tonnes of saffron on 2019 worth over 350 million dollars.

Major export destinations were Germany, France, China and Italy among others. Iran’s exports have faced with two obstacles the first being the US imposed sanctions (making international banking much more difficult) and the second, being the coronavirus pandemic.
