Supermoon dazzles over ancient Greek temple
This year's first supermoon made a bold appearance behind the ancient Greek Temple of Poseidon on Greece's southern coast of Cape Sounion on Tuesday (April 27).
Coined as the "pink moon," it briefly revealed itself through the clouds, looming over the 5th century BC temple dedicated to the mythological god of the sea, which stands upon a cliff-top over the sea.
According to the old Farmers Almanac the moon was named after the pink creeping phlox or moss phlox wildflower which blooms in April, found in eastern North America.
The term "supermoon" was conceived by an astrologer, according to NASA, and refers to when the full moon is closest to the earth. It appeared full from Sunday evening and will continue to appear full until Wednesday morning. Another full moon is expected on May 26.
