US Senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders has warned Americans that President Donald Trump was leading the United States towards authoritarianism.

Speaking at the 2020 Democratic National Convention (DNC) on Monday Sanders described the actions carried out by Trump during his tenure as US president as "unthinkable."

"[T]he unthinkable has become normal. He has tried to prevent people from voting, undermined the U.S. Postal Service, deployed the military and federal agents against peaceful protesters, threatened to delay the election and suggested that he will not leave office if he loses," he said, adding,"Under this administration, authoritarianism has taken root in our country."

The damage done to American democratic values and the economy, the mishandling of the coronavirus crisis, as well as the brutal crackdown Trump ordered against pro-justice demonstrators protesting the unwarranted police killing of George Floyd, were cited by Sanders as a few examples of the US president's incompetence.

"We're facing the worst public health crisis in 100 years and the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression," Sanders noted, comparing Trump's response to dire situation to that of notorious Roman emperor Nero.

"Nero fiddled while Rome burned, Trump golfs."

Sanders cited racism and global warming as two issues exacerbated by Trump's decisions.

"We are confronting systemic racism and the enormous threat to our planet of climate change. And in the midst of all of this, we have a president who is not only incapable of addressing these crises but is leading us down the path of authoritarianism," Sanders pointed out.

Sander warned that "the insidious way authoritarianism destroys democracy, decency and humanity," adding that, "in the name of racism or white nationalism" people justify carrying out horrible acts of violence on other human beings.

Sanders expressed support for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden as the replacement for Trump in the upcoming presidential vote.

Sanders called for an "unprecedented response" to defeat Trump and elect Biden.

The US presidential election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2020.
