US Democrats are warning Russia over interfering in US 2020 presidential election, citing allegations of 2016 meddling, previously denied by Moscow.

“It's not Iran. It's not North Korea. It's not China. It's Russia,” said Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy, claiming that Moscow has “the capability and intention to significantly disrupt the 2020 American election.”

This  is while Republicans are trying to focus on China and Iran instead, with Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell alleging that while Russia remains a “significant threat” it would be a “serious mistake” to ignore China and Iran.

'Elevating China's threat, diminishing Russia's'

Democrats were citing the 2016 presidential election, in which Russia was blamed for meddling with the race, which ended in the victory of business mogul Donald Trump as the president.
The Kremlin denied allegations that it sought to intervene in the US presidential election.

"They did so in 2016, and they are doing so now. The American people, I believe they should decide who the president of the United States is, not Vladimir Putin making that decision for us,” said House speaker Nancy Pelosi in an interview with CNN, alleging that Russia  was interfering “24/7” in this year’s election.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff also suggested that Trump is trying  "elevate" China's threat "diminish" Russia's.

“It's quite a deliberate one, to, I think, suit the president's political narrative more, which is [to] elevate the China threat and try to diminish any concerns about Russia, when Russia is the one that is engaging here in a covert way to try to influence the vote,” he said.

Late last week, the director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, claimed in a public statement that Russia was interfering in the 2020 election to “denigrate” Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who is running against Trump in November.

"Some Kremlin-linked actors are also seeking to boost President Trump’s candidacy on social media and Russian television," alleged William Evanina.

The row between conservatives and liberals on who to blame in an election year is a telltale sign of the rise in hate and division in the United States.
