This state-run store offers wheat flour on subsidized rates. The decision is aimed at alleviating the growing public anger over wheat shortage in Pakistan that has seen an unprecedented increase in flour price across the country.

Cities after cities in all four provinces of Pakistan - Balochistan, Sind, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa - are facing acute shortage of wheat flour which is the most essential kitchen item.

People are longing for chapattis and naans in these provinces with governments deflecting blames on each other for the crisis. In some cases even the commodity is not available at all.

The current government led by Prime Minister Imran Khan is already under public pressure due to rising inflation in the country. And the latest crisis over wheat shortage has further eroded the government’s credibility.

The mismanagement is blamed for the current wheat shortage. Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf blamed the provincial governments of Punjab and Sind for the flour crisis. But these regional regimes hit back at the federal government saying the Imran Khan government did not intervene in time.

Pakistan usually imports wheat annually to meet its domestic needs. But last year the country’s government allowed export of wheat which ended up in shortage at home. Now, in order to deal with the shortage, the government has decided to import wheat again.

But opposition parties have called for an investigation into the issue to know if it was just a case of mismanagement or financial corruption.
