Tripoli hit by garbage crisis after fighting closes landfill

Libya's capital Tripoli was hit by a garbage crisis as tonnes of rubbish piled up on the streets after the closure of the main landfill in Sidi Sayeh area where fighting was taking place, as filmed on Monday.

"The crisis started a week ago and is becoming worse. Since then, the garbage crisis has worsened on the streets of Tripoli. People no longer know where to keep garbage," said one of the Tripoli residents.

The armed conflict in and around Tripoli escalated in April after General Khalifa Haftar and his Libyan National Army (LNA) launched an offensive to take the capital from the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA).
