Champions League group stage draw made in Monaco

European Champions Liverpool have received a relatively kind draw for this year's UEFA Champions League group stage, while Barcelona will have to come through a tough group.

The draw was made in Monaco on Thursday, pitting Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool against Napoli, Austrian side Salzburg and Belgium’s Genk in Group E.

The draw also produced 2 other fascinating groups, as Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, and Inter Milan, with nine European Cups between them, along with the Czech champions, Slavia Prague, were drawn together in Group F, dubbed as the Group of Death.

Group D is also a mouth-watering prospect, with Italian champions Juventus taking on Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and Lokomotiv Moscow.

The first round of the games kick off on September 17th.

Also during the ceremony in Monaco, Liverpool's 28-year-old Dutch Champions League-winning defender was named UEFA's Men's Player of the Year.

Virgil van Dijk has now become the first ever defender to win the award, beating football icons Cristiano Ronaldo of Juventus and Barcelona's Lionel Messi, who have won the award five-times between them. The Dutchman also won the Defender of the Season award for the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League campaign.

The Netherlands’ center back has transformed Liverpool's defense since joining them from Southampton in January 2018, for a then world record fee of 75 million Pounds. Liverpool conceded just 20 goals in the Premier League last year, while keeping 20 clean sheets.
