Fireworks, lucky draws and children painting contests, these celebrations in the port city of Karachi are for the day of Ghadeer, the perfection of religion day.

Across Pakistan Shia Muslims are celebrating the historic occasion of Ghadeer when Prophet Muhammad PBUH appointed Ali Ibn-e-Abi Talib as his successor. This year the gathering of men, women and children at the city center started the Ghadeer celebrations .

On this day some 14 centuries ago, the first Shia Imam, Ali ibn-e-Abi Talib was appointed by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as his successor.

Imam Ali, who was later martyred, is highly respected for his courage and deep loyalty to the Prophet as well as for administering justice.

Special rituals and supplications were held across Pakistan. Here in Karachi praising-eulogies were recited by different poets to pay tributes to their beloved Imam and to highlight the importance of Ghadeer in gatherings held all over the city.

Ghadeer, also known as Eid al-Akbar, is the day when Muslims believe that the mission of all the previous messengers got accomplished.

In the tenth year of Hijra, Prophet Mohammad received a message from Allah, to stop the pilgrims at a place called Khum near Mecca, and to designate Ali a.s as his successor.
