Yemen conducts fresh drone attacks on Saudi airport
Saudi Arabia’s airport of Abha has been hit by more drone attacks launched by Yemeni forces, as part of their retaliatory attacks against the kingdom in a Saudi-led war.
Brigadier General Yahya Saree, the spokesman for Yemeni Armed Forces, said the domestically-developed Qasef-2K (Striker-2K) hit the airport in the southwestern province of Asir on Friday.
He added that the attacks halted air traffic at the airport.
The airport had most recently been targeted by the Yemeni forces on Tuesday.
Also on Friday, the Yemeni forces fired Zelzal-1 missiles at gatherings of Saudi-backed mercenaries near the Alab crossing, killing and injuring an unspecified number of them. Another Zelzal-1 missile hit mercenaries’ positions in the al-Raboah region of Asir.
Saudi Arabia and a number of its allies launched a brutal war against Yemen in March 2015.
The war sought to eliminate Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement and restore a former regime in Yemen. It has achieved neither of those goals.
The US-based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, estimates that the Saudi-led war has claimed the lives of over 60,000 Yemenis since January 2016.
The war has also taken a heavy toll on Yemen’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The United Nations (UN) says over 24 million Yemenis are in dire need of humanitarian aid, including 10 million suffering from extreme levels of hunger.
