New US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper, travelling in Asia, called on Japan and South Korea to patch up relations in the interests of containing what the US perceives as shared adversaries.

Seoul has said it may withdraw from an intelligence sharing agreement with Tokyo and Washington if Japan continues its trade restrictions. In South Korea the GSOMIA intelligence sharing agreement is viewed by some as hindering the goal of stable, peaceful inter-Korean relations.

Early Tuesday morning North Korea test fired two short range missiles. While the US and South Korea label such activities as provocations, North Korea contends they are only exercising their right to self defense, pointing out the US and South Korea are right now engaged in joint military drills.

US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper was sworn in July 23rd and has already alarmed regional capitals with his call for the prompt deployment of American intermediate range missiles in Asia.
