Tommy Robinson supporters in UK target prison after former EDL leader jailed
Supporters of Tommy Robinson protested outside Belmarsh prison in London on Saturday after the former English Defence League (EDL) leader was jailed for nine months for contempt of court.
Fireworks and flares were set off by the group, who carried banners demanding Robinson's freedom. Balloons with messages for the ex-EDL leader were released into the air and flown over the prison, while a collection was held for his three children.
Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was found guilty last week of interfering with the trial of a sexual grooming gang at Leeds Crown Court in May 2018.
The Old Bailey ruled that his Facebook Live video of defendants had breached reporting restrictions and jeopardised the trial.
He was originally jailed for 13 months on the day of the Facebook broadcast, but was released two months into his sentence after winning his appeal.
The case was then referred to the Attorney General Geoffrey Cox who opted to bring fresh proceedings which resulted in Robinson's conviction.
