Not enough support among lawmakers for Trump impeachment inquiry: House Judiciary chairman

The chairman of the US House Judiciary Committee says there is not enough support among the lawmakers for a formal impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump.

Democratic Representative Jerrold Nadler made the comment in an interview with CNN released Wednesday.

"It very well may come to a formal impeachment inquiry," said the member of the US House of Representatives from New York's 10th congressional district. "There does not appear to be support for it now. And we will see. The support may develop."

Yet, the top lawmaker pledged to continue efforts that could ultimately lead to Trump’s impeachment based on the Mueller report.

“We are going to go step by step.  First, we’re investigating all the things we would investigate frankly in an impeachment inquiry.  We are starting with the Mueller report, which shows, I think it shows ample evidence of multiple crimes of obstruction of justice and abuse of power,” he told CNN’s “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.”

Nadler added that support “may develop” but “right now, we have to get the facts out.”

He further expressed disappointment at the possibility of seeing the full report, as a result of which a contempt resolution for US Attorney General William Barr would proceed as scheduled on June 11.

Nadler found it unlikely that “they give us a very good faith offer, which I can’t imagine they would do” to see Mueller’s full, unredacted report.

Calls for impeachment of Trump have grown among politicians in the United States in the wake of the special counsel’s final statement at the conclusion of the so-called Russia probe.

In his last statement, the special counsel neither cleared the president nor charged him, throwing the ball into the Congress’ court.

Mueller argued that the decision not to charge Trump was made based on the Justice Department’s longstanding policy of not bringing charges against a sitting president.
