US using Google to control public discourse: International lawyer

Google disabled Press TV access to its official accounts on the technology company's platforms, including YouTube and Gmail.

The act of shutting down Press TV’s Google account is nothing but a direct threat from the United States to the freedom of speech, says an analyst.

“Google in fact now is a company for Alphabet Inc. That is the parent company. It is a massive conglomerate of nothing which came to be one of the most wealthy corporations in the world essentially by cleverly usurping what ultimately are public assets, namely the control of the internet, the ability to search it and to operate essentially as a gateway for almost any and all use of the internet,” Barry Grossman, an international lawyer, told Press TV in an interview on Friday.

“Now back in the day when there was still some pretense about the United States being about competition and the like, there was at least an attempt made to prevent these kinds of massive combinations from dominating entire sectors of the economy, but what seems to have been lost on most people is that in the intervening period there has been sort of a de facto conspiracy formed amongst the institutions and government agencies and branches of government in the United States that were responsible for regulating the private sector in order to protect competition all to advance what in effect are US corporate interest internationally. That what’s globalism ultimately means. They sacrificed any allegiance whatsoever to their underlying philosophy of free markets and competition in order to rally all of their assets -- private and otherwise -- in service of their collective goal of essentially promoting US hegemony,” he added.

Google has blocked Press TV and Hispan TV's access to their official accounts on the technology company's platforms, including YouTube and Gmail, without prior notice, citing “violation of policies”.

Google has so far refused to provide any explanation for disabling Press TV’s account.

The Google ban seems to be in line with the US government’s stepped-up pressure on Iran and an all-out propaganda campaign against the country, which includes targeting Iranian media.
