Monte-Carlo Masters: Lajovic stuns Thiem

Serbia's Dusan Lajovic celebrates winning his third round match against Austria's Dominic Thiem.

Serbian tennis player Dusan Lajovic has pulled off the biggest upset of the round of 16 in the Monte-Carlo Masters, knocking out 4th seeded Dominic Thiem.

The unseeded Lajovic upset the Austrian 6-3, 6-3, clinching victory on his third match point on Thursday. The Serb reached the second ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal in his career by saving seven out of nine breakpoints and adding five breaks to beat the Austrian.

It took Lajovic one hour and 32 minutes to book a clash against Italian Lorenzo Sonego, who earlier beat British player Cameron Norrie 6-2, 7-5.

Meanwhile, Italy’s Fabio Fognini recorded the other surprising result of the round of 16, getting the better of third seed Alexander Zverev in straight sets.

The 13th seeded Italian edged past the German 8-6 in the first set tiebreak and broke him twice in the second set to cruise to a 6-1 win. Fognini will now play ninth seed Borna Coric of Croatia, who beat unseeded Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4, 6-2 earlier on Thursday.
