Iran transfers 30 tons of yellow cake to Uranium Conversion Facility in Isfahan
Iran has transferred the second shipment of yellow cake weighing 30 tons from the central Yazd province to the Uranium Conversion Facility (UCF) in Isfahan.
The shipment was delivered to the UCF facility of Isfahan from the Shahid Rezaeinejad yellow cake factory on Wednesday, said Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI).
Salehi said the first shipment weighing 10 tons was delivered from Ardakan to Isfahan on April 9, 2018.
He added that the Shahid Rezaeinejad yellow cake factory, which was reopened recently, uses uranium extracted from the Saghand 1 and 2 mines in Yazd province.
He said Iran’s Yazd province was the major producer of preliminary materials for the nuclear industry, including uranium and yellow cake.
He described uranium as a strategic material for the nuclear industry and said plans have been set in motion to raise uranium production in the country.
The 30-ton yellow cake shipment will be later sent to the Natanz nuclear facility for enrichment.
Yellow cake can be processed into enriched uranium to make fuel rods for nuclear power plants.
Under the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran has agreed to restrict its enrichment program in return for relief from sanctions.
As part of the deal, which is officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran has agreed to keep its stock of low-enriched uranium below 300 kilograms. The deal stipulates that Iran must “keep its level of uranium enrichment at up to 3.67 percent for 15 years.”
