Brexit deal row

Britain’s Labour Party leader has urged Prime Minister Theresa May to call for snap elections if she can’t get a good deal on Brexit. Corbyn was addressing his supporters in Liverpool amid mounting criticism at home over May’s Brexit plans. Meanwhile, a rally dubbed Save Brexit Campaign was held in the town of Bolton. Participants called for a clean break with the European Union. They expressed opposition to May’s attempts to keep close post-Brexit trade relations with the remaining 27 EU member states. Former Brexit secretary David Davis and British politician Nigel Farage also took part in the demo. On Friday, May said talks have hit an impasse and demanded more respect from Brussels. This came after EU leaders rejected a major part of her Brexit plan.

Trump’s pick abuse allegation

A woman, who has accused US President Donald Trump's pick for the Supreme Court of sexual assault, has now agreed to testify before a Senate panel. Lawyers for Christine Blasey Ford say she accepted the Senate Judiciary Committee's request to provide her knowledge of Brett Kavanaugh's alleged sexual misconduct next week. The Senate Judiciary Committee had put off a vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation after Professor Ford leveled the allegation against him last week. Meanwhile, US Vice President Mike Pence has thrown his weight behind Kavanaugh.

Iran’s vow of vengeance

Iran’s armed forces spokesperson says Tehran will heavily punish the supporters of terrorists who launched Ahvaz deadly attack. Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi said they will shortly be identified and punished. He added that two of the four terrorists were brothers and the third brother is a member of Daesh and is now in Syria. Shekarchi also said the roots of all of these terrorist groups are the Zionist regime, the US and their allies in the region.

US sanctions on North Korea

The US has warned that it will not hesitate to impose sanctions on any shippers that violate United Nations limitations on transporting fuel to North Korea. State Department Spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Pyongyang continues to employ tactics to evade UN sanctions. She said UN member states are required to prohibit ship-to-ship transfers of petroleum fuel to the country. On Monday, the US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley accused Moscow of transferring fuel to North Korea at sea. Russia has denied the allegations. Washington says it has tracked some 148 cases this year of tankers delivering fuel to North Korea in breach of a UN cap of 500,000 barrels a year.

Rouhani slams US policy

Iran’s president has slammed the US and its regional allies for providing support for terrorist groups in the Middle East, including the perpetrators of Saturday’s bloody attack in the Iranian city of Ahvaz. Rouhani underlined that it is clear who perpetrated the act of terror and with whom they are affiliated. The Iranian president added those who claim to be supporters of human rights in the world and keep banging the drums for the same should be held accountable for the deadly assault. Rouhani vowed that all perpetrators behind the attack on the Iranian nation will be brought to justice. He warned that Iran will exhaust all legal channels to retaliate against the bloody crime with full force. Speaking ahead of his departure for New York to attend the UN General Assembly, Rouhani also accused the US of abusing the world body.

Militants’ reaction to Idlib deal

Turkey-backed militant groups in Syria say they have accepted a recent deal on creating a demilitarized zone around the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib. An alliance of militants, calling itself the National Liberation Front, announced its cooperation on the deal late Saturday. The alliance, at the same time, said it will stay alert to what it called betrayals by the Syrian government and its supporters. In the meantime, al-Qaeda-linked Hurras al-Deen group rejected the deal clinched by Moscow and Anakara in the Russian city of Sochi earlier this week. Another terror group, Nusra Front is yet to announce its stance. Under the agreement, all factions in the planned demilitarized zone must hand over their heavy weaponry by October tenth. The Nusra Front has also to leave the zone by mid-October. Idlib is the last stronghold of terror groups fighting Syrian government forces.

China-US tensions

China has cancelled military talks with the US in protest against Washington’s sanctions on Beijing for buying weapons from Russia. The Defense Ministry said in a statement that it would recall the country’s navy chief who is attending a conference in the US and was scheduled to visit the Pentagon later this week. The ministry said the sanctions are a blatant violation of international norms and a breach of relations between Washington and Beijing. Earlier, China summoned the US ambassador and warned Washington of consequences if it did not immediately revoke the sanctions. On Thursday, the US State Department imposed sanctions on a branch of the Chinese military and its director for what it called significant transactions with Russia’s main arms exporter.
