Renewed clashes in Libyan capital between rival forces

Forces allied with Libya's UN-backed government said on Friday, September 21, that they recaptured Tripoli's southern borders from rival groups.

Fighting erupted on Monday, September 17, ending a shaky truce brokered by the United Nations two weeks ago after more than 60 people were killed in clashes since the end of August.

Some groups based outside Tripoli have attacked rival factions based in the capital to gain access to public funds and businesses linked to militias, a recurring theme in the OPEC oil producer since the toppling of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

On Friday, forces allied with the UN-backed government in Tripoli were able to retake the Wadi al-Rabiea axis south of the capital. The 42nd brigade has been fighting alongside the Government of National Accord against rival groups.
