Turkish restaurant joins Erdogan's currency campaign

A restaurant in Istanbul is offering free fish and bread to anyone who converts at least $100 to lira, in a bid to support Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who called on Turks to sell their gold and hard currency as part of a "national battle" against economic enemies.

"The aim here is to make our voice heard and show our reaction," restaurant owner Adnan Celiker said on Thursday, adding that they launched a similar campaign in 2016 when the lira hit record lows following Donald Trump's election victory in the United States and domestic security worries after that year's failed coup.

Every customer who comes to the restaurant in Istanbul's Beykoz district with a slip showing they converted a minimum amount of $100 will be offered one portion of free fish and bread, according to a banner posted on the restaurant's facebook page.

Turkish lira crashed to an all-time low of 7.24 to the dollar on Monday, hit by worries over Erdogan's calls for lower borrowing costs and by worsening ties with the United States, a major NATO ally. But it gained some support and strengthened more than 3 percent on Thursday, shrugging off US comments ruling out the removal of steel tariffs on Turkey even if it frees a US pastor.

Erdogan has repeatedly told Turks to exchange gold and hard currency into lira, saying the country is involved in an economic war with enemies and calling for a boycott of US electronic goods.
