Trump has the same level of support for impeachment as Nixon had: Poll
More than 40 percent of Americans say President Donald Trump should be impeached and removed from office, according to a most recent poll, which is remarkably similar to one conducted over four decades ago, showing almost the same percentage of support for the impeachment of president Richard Nixon, who resigned before being impeached.
The poll conducted by SSRS for CNN indicated that 42 percent of those surveyed said that Trump “should be impeached,” compared to 51 percent, who said that they “don’t feel that way.” Seven percent of the respondents also registered no opinion.
Those, who supported Trump’s impeachment, include 77 percent of Democrats and only 9 percent of Republicans.
According to CNN, the overall support for impeaching Trump is at a level similar to the public's support of Nixon’s impeachment in a March 1974 Harris poll.
That poll was conducted after the Watergate Scandal came to light, but months before the House of Representatives started to take action against Nixon. Nixon, however, resigned in August 1974, as he was just one step ahead of an impeachment vote.
The Harris poll was conducted after a series of crucial points in the scandal was revealed, CNN noted, saying that Trump already has the same level of support for impeachment even without similar events have take place against him. There is, however, no indication any such vote is coming for Trump, it wrote.
The newspaper also detailed that 87 percent of Conservatives are against the idea of impeachment, but 71 percent of Liberals are supporting it.
It further suggested that the support for Trump’s impeachment is even higher than the public support for impeaching former president Bill Clinton—that was around only 29 percent through most of 1998— when he was impeached by the House of Representatives.
Trump’s approval rating is also much lower than Clinton’, at the time the House attempted to impeach him, CNN wrote. Clinton’s approval rating was over 70 percent at the time, while Trump’s currently stands at just 39 percent.
