IMF warning US

The International Monetary Fund has criticized the US for its protectionist policies. IMF chief, Christine Lagarde says the US actions pose a serious risk to the global economy. President Donald Trump has introduced tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to the US. Washington’s key allies, including the European Union, Canada and Mexico have promised countermeasures. The US is embroiled in a trade war with China as well. Lagarde also warned that Trump’s domestic fiscal policies, including tax cuts and increased spending pose a threat to the US economy.

Assault on Hudaydah in Yemen

The United Nations Security Council has called for keeping open the Yemeni port of Hudaydah amid a Saudi-led assault to capture it. The council made the call following UN warnings of a looming humanitarian disaster from the assault. The council also voiced deep concern about the risks to the humanitarian situation in Yemen. Earlier, Iran condemned the military operation urging Riyadh and its allies to end their aggression. Saudi and Emirati-backed forces launched the offensive on Wednesday. Riyadh has also intensified aerial and naval attacks against Hudaydah. The port city is the main lifeline for food aid to Yemen.

Lebanon politics

Following its May 6 parliamentary elections that saw Prime Minister Saad Hariri reappointed for the third time, Lebanon is still without a government. This week, Hariri presented President Michel Aoun a preliminary proposal to form a board-based 30-member cabinet. However, negotiations continue without a breakthrough. Press TV Correspondent Rana Aladdin reports from Beirut.

Iran Leader slams US

Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, says the US has failed to achieve its goals in the Middle East despite spending trillions of dollars. Ayatollah Khamenei said the US wants to increase economic pressure on Iranian people. The leader said Western powers always hatch their plots against the Iranian nation, but they have so far failed. He called for unity among the Iranians in the face of enemies who try to weaken the morale of the people. Ayatollah Khamenei urged people to invest in production to contribute to the economic development of the country. The speech was made after Ayatollah Khamenei led the Eid al-Fitr prayers in the capital Tehran.

Marking Eid al-Fitr

Muslims celebrate the holy festival of Eid al-Fitr marking the end of fasting month of Ramadan. The celebration is a public holiday in many Muslim countries. During Eid, Muslims will often purchase new clothes for the occasion and take part in festivals and celebrations. Many will wake up early to pray at a mosque or outdoor prayer venue, while gifts and cards are often exchanged among friends and family.

Trump immigration policy

Opposition is growing to the US administration’s policy to separate undocumented immigrant families at the border. US House Speaker, Paul Ryan, said he is not comfortable with the move. The Republican lawmaker said he wants Congress to end the controversial practice through a piece of immigration legislation. Earlier, Republican Senator, Marco Rubio, criticized the policy. Meanwhile, the White House spokeswoman minced no words to defend the US president’s policy of separation. However, she received criticism about the morality of splitting up families.
