US President Donald Trump says he will “officially” ask Department of Justice to start an investigation into spying on the Trump campaign in 2016, as it is already probing possible collusion between the campaign and Russia.

Trump suggested in a tweet on Sunday that the FBI or the department itself could have spied on the campaign, which ultimately emerged victor in the 2016 presidential election.

“I hereby demand, and will do so officially tomorrow, that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes - and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!”

Trump’s call came after days of sounding the alarm on Twitter as the so-called Russia probe was underway to find out possible collusion between the campaign and the Kremlin, an allegation both sides have denied.

‘Bigger than Watergate’

Four former Trump associates have either pleaded guilty or been indicted in the so-called Russia probe. This is while the president believes that the investigation is a "hoax," a “witch hunt,” or a “scam.”

In the past few days, Trump has specifically been complaining about an FBI informant embedded in his campaign, alleging that the infiltration would amount to a scandal "bigger than Watergate."

The informant reportedly met with Trump campaign advisers, George Papadopoulos and Carter Page, after learning that they had contacts with Russia.

House Republicans are, meanwhile, seeking the identity of the informant.

On the other hand, Democrats argue that such an effort would undermine the special counsel Robert Mueller's probe.
