Why should North Korea trust Trump?
North Korea leader Kim Jong-un has legitimate reasons to doubt US President Donald Trump’s real intentions for a meeting, says an American political commentator, noting that Washington has already walked back many of its promises to other countries.
Scott Bennett, a former US Army psychological warfare officer, made the remarks when discussing news that Trump and Kim had agreed to discuss the possible denuclearization of the North.
Pyongyang and Washington have long been engaged in an standoff over North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
Bennett said Trump’s view on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers – the US, the UK, France, China, Russia and Germany-- and his open promise to tear it up shows why Pyongyang should not easily trust him.
“You have betrayed the world, betrayed Europe, betrayed Iran and betrayed your own people by threatening to tear up the JCPOA,” he said. “When you commit your country to an agreement you are bound by that agreement.”
Bennett said if anything, the Trump White House’s stance with regard to the Iran deal showed how the American head of state was going to stab Pyongyang in the back.
The solution, according to the political commander, was forging strong ties with Russia or China, making it more difficult for the US to scrap the deal later on.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently said that any attack on Russia’s allies was an attack on Moscow itself and Russia would hit back with a response that would case “catastrophe for mankind.”
“That philosophy should be extended to North Korea over this agreement and any agreement that is conducted,” he said.
“Because it is only with the thread of force and unification of other countries of the world against the tyranny and the hysteria and the regime change madness which is taking over the United States government,” Bennett argued.
It is through this position that Pyongyang needs to establish and challenge Trump in order to make sure that it would never become another country destroyed by the US, said Bennett.
Trump and Kim will reportedly meet by May.
