Democrats need many GOP senators to vote for Trump’s removal: Analyst

An American political analyst and activist says calls for Donald Trump’s impeachment will not go very far since Democrats need many Republican senators to vote for the president’s removal which will not happen easily.   

Myles Hoenig, a former Green Party candidate for Congress, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Friday while commenting on a statement by a US congresswoman who said Trump “poses a dangerous threat to national security.”

Carol Shea-Porter, who serves as the Representative for New Hampshire's 1st congressional district since January 2017, said on Thursday that she is cosponsoring impeachment articles introduced by liberal Representative Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.).

All other Democrats who have launched an effort to oust Trump by endorsing his impeachment have largely hailed from safe blue districts.

Citing comments from Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) in support of impeachment, Shea-Porter said that Trump is not fit for office.

"Many Members of Congress, including myself, agree with Republican Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker that President Trump poses a dangerous threat to national security and the future of our democracy," Shea-Porter said in a statement.

One of the 12 US House Democrats who represents a district won by Donald Trump in 2016 says the president “poses a dangerous threat to national security.”

Hoenig said, “To paraphrase former House Minority Leader Gerald Ford, ‘impeachment is whatever a majority of the House of Representatives says it is.’ If impeachment was non-partisan and based on laws broken, not campaign promises held (in Trump’s case) or real violations of the Constitution, President Clinton would have begun a string of impeachments leading up to the present administration.”

“This country is more polarized than ever before, and that’s including the Obama years. What’s a bit different now is that Democratic Congress members are outpacing the Republicans in their call to impeach the president of the other party. For most that call for it, they’re in safe states. And even in safe states a majority of Democrats still did not support the most recent vote in the House,” he added.

“Congresswoman Shea-Porter of New Hampshire is not really going out on a limb here. Although in a very Republican state, she’s using an argument that’s safe for her state - national security. Home of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, militarism is in their blood. Playing up national security is a smart move,” he stated.

“Regardless of how many Democrats call for Trump’s impeachment, even if it eventually happens, they would still need a sizeable number of Republican senators to vote for removal. Not going to happen unless they can see Pence’s role as future president a benefit or hindrance to keeping the White House in 2020,” the analyst said.

“We also saw after Clinton’s impeachment that he went out of office with very high ratings, something Trump would be able to capitalize on as well. Both were very skilled in public manipulation,” Hoenig concluded.
