Embassy move removes facade of US being honest broker: Analyst

US President Donald Trump, meets with Congressional leadership including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (2nd L), Republican of Kentucky, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (2nd R), and Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis (R), in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, DC, December 7, 2017.

President Donald Trump’s announcement of the US recognizing Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital has exposed American disingenuousness and removed the facade of Washington being an honest broker in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, according to Myles Hoenig, an American political analyst and activist.

In a speech at the White House on Wednesday, Trump officially declared Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel's capital, saying his administration would also begin a process of moving the American embassy in Tel Aviv to the holy city, which is expected to take years.

“President Trump’s announcement of the US recognizing Jerusalem [al-Quds] as Israel’s capital, with an intended move of its embassy from Tel Aviv to there, erases a long standing disingenuousness. That is the US is an honest broker in the Middle East peace process,” Hoenig, a former Green Party candidate for Congress, told Press TV on Thursday.

“With the US nearly always doing Israel’s bidding, the Palestinian Authority serving the Israeli government, and now the Saudi government working closely with Israel on a host of issues, we’re seeing clarity and honesty as to whose side each player is on,” he added.

“This could enrage the Islamic world to react or it could force other players, notably the European Union, Russia, China, and others to come down hard and on the side of Palestine, for once,” he stated.

“Once again, the Trump administration miscalculated international disapproval of its foreign policies. The Muslim ban and disbanding the climate agreement weren’t enough. Now after decades of pretending to be an honest broker, while all the while being either a silent partner or open collaborator, the US administration has finally revealed its hand in the peace process,” the analyst noted.

“The 2-state peace plan has long been dead but not recognized. Netanyahu and previous Israeli administrations have long sought Israeli domination in the region at the expense of the Palestinian people. The ‘peace’ has been maintained simply because Israel has the greatest military presence in the Middle East and is backed by the most powerful of all empires,” he noted.

“Although world opinion is against this move, and even allies are coming out verbally against this, even targeting Trump himself, this was a bi-partisan decision. It is alleged that Sen. Schumer of New York, head of the Democratic leadership in the Senate, encouraged Trump to do this,” he said.

“With the Democrats riding high on how it deals with its sexual predators within the party, and real ammunition against the Republicans regarding the tax reform bill to support the very wealthy, which includes nearly all their members, it is unlikely that Schumer will get any heat for Trump’s decision and pronouncements from the Democratic leadership will be muted and of little consequence,” the commentator stated.

“This is a new chapter in the fight for Palestinian independence and although where we go is unknown, at least we know that the US’s role will be diminished, if not ignored, which is a healthy move for peace,” he concluded.
