Mnuchin says ‘didn’t realize' his dollar bill photo would go public
US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says he “didn’t realize” that the photo showing him and his wife holding a sheet of dollar bills with a villainous pose would be made public.
Mnuchin made the comments in an interview with Fox News host Chris Wallace on Sunday.
“I didn’t realize that the pictures were public and going on the internet and viral,” Mnuchin said. “But people have the right to do that. People can express what they want. That’s the great thing about social media today. People can say and communicate what they want.”
The secretary and his wife, Louise Linton, showed up at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) in Washington on the occasion of the printing of the first currency notes bearing his signature, alongside US Treasurer Jovita Carranza's.
The couple is seen holding up a new series of 2017 50-subject $1 notes before being sent to the US Federal Reserve to issue into circulation.
“Some folks — and I’m looking at the picture here, which you can’t see — say that you two look like two villains from a James Bond movie,” Wallace said. “I’m sure you’ve heard that. I guess my question is: What were you thinking?”
The photo was taken by Jacquelyn Martin, a wire-service photographer working for the Associated Press.
“I guess I should take that as a compliment that I look like a villain in a great, successful James Bond movie. But let me just say, I was very excited of having my signature on the money,” he added. “It’s obviously a great privilege and a great honor and something I’m very proud of.”
