US President Donald Trump has attacked “dumb” New York Times over an opinion column about how he is being played by Chinese President Xi Jinping in the backdrop of his recent visit to Asia.

The US president took to Twitter Wednesday to defend his diplomatic efforts in China in the face criticism in a piece penned by foreign affairs columnist Thomas Friedman.

"The failing @nytimes hates the fact that I have developed a great relationship with World leaders like Xi Jinping, President of China," he said, one day after returning from his marathon trip to Asia. "They should realize that these relationships are a good thing, not a bad thing. The US is being respected again. Watch Trade!"

In his op-ed, titled China Could Sell Trump the Brooklyn Bridge, Friedman claimed that Xi is manipulating Trump on trade.

"Xi has been brilliant at playing Trump, plying him with flattery and short-term trade concessions and deflecting him from the real structural trade imbalances with China," Friedman wrote.

Earlier in the day, Trump attacked another news organization, CNN.

"While in the Philippines I was forced to watch @CNN, which I have not done in months, and again realized how bad, and FAKE, it is. Loser!” he wrote.

Since the 2016 campaign, Trump has repeatedly used the term "fake news" largely for any coverage criticizing him or his allies.

In a televised statement after his 13-day trip to Asia, the US president repeated threats against North Korea, saying he would not surrender to its "nuclear blackmail," and will not spare any efforts to apply "maximum pressure" on Pyongyang.

"I made clear that we will not allow this twisted dictatorship to hold the world hostage to nuclear blackmail," he said. "President Xi recognizes that North Korea is a great threat to China."

The North Korean leadership has threatened to attack the US with nukes if it continues its aggressive policy against the country.
