EU ‘to make sure all sides fully implement Iran deal’
The European Union says it will make sure that the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six other countries “will continue to be fully implemented by all, in all its parts.”
The EU’s foreign policy director, Federica Mogherini, made the remarks on the sidelines of the Regional Security and Sustainable Development Conference in the Uzbek city of Samarkand on Friday.
Mogherini said the agreement was “a major achievement of European and international multilateral diplomacy that is delivering.”
Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council — the United States, France, Britain, Russia, and China — plus Germany finalized the nuclear agreement on July 14, 2015 and started implementing it on January 16, 2016. The EU coordinated the negotiations that culminated in the deal.
Under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the official name of the deal, Iran undertook to put limitations on its nuclear program in exchange for the termination of all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on it.
The US, under President Donald Trump, has however been attempting to undermine the deal, falsely claiming that Iran is non-compliant with it.
This is while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been consistently verifying Iranian compliance.
Citing that verification, all the other parties to the deal have been working to prevent the collapse of the deal and have been involved in efforts to convince US lawmakers not to undermine the agreement now that Trump has kicked a decision with his “decertification” to US Congress.
Mogherini recently visited Washington to personally lobby with the US lawmakers.
