The majority of Americans say US President Donald Trump should not pull the country out of the international nuclear agreement with Iran, according to a new poll.

Despite Trump’s announcement last week that he refused to certify the nuclear agreement, two in three Americans oppose withdrawing from the international accord, according to the CNN poll conducted by SSRS.

Eight in 10 Democrats and two in three Independents oppose withdrawing from the 2015 agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the survey found.

Even in Trump’s own party, Republicans are evenly split, with 48 percent desiring to remain and 47 percent to withdraw.

Only three in 10 adults say Iran poses a serious threat to the US, according to the poll.

Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – the United States, France, Britain, Russia and China – plus Germany signed the nuclear agreement on July 14, 2015 and started implementing it on January 16, 2016.

Trump announced earlier this month he would not recertify that Tehran is complying with the 2015 nuclear agreement.

The president is required by US law to certify every 90 days whether or not Iran is complying with the nuclear deal. He has certified the deal twice since coming to office.

The US Congress has 60 days to decide whether to reimpose economic sanctions against Tehran, removed under the accord.

The CNN poll found that Americans view North Korea as a far greater threat. An overwhelming 86 percent of Americans say that Pyongyang poses a serious threat to the US.

Americans are also growing more concerned about how Trump is handling the escalating situation. More than six in 10 say Trump's responses to North Korea's threats have been more reckless than responsible.

Tensions between Washington and Pyongyang have escalated in recent months, with both countries threatening each other with a nuclear strike.

An NBC News/SurveyMonkey survey released Wednesday showed that 72 percent of surveyed Americans fear the US will get involved in a major war during Trump’s first term in office.
