Catalonia defiant on independence vote despite strong opposition from Madrid
Independence for Spain’s Catalonia region is once again back at the front burners. The regional parliament of Catalonia has voted for a referendum that could ultimately pave the way for the region’s full independence from Spain. Authorities in Catalonia have vowed to hold the controversial vote on October 1st.  The developments have angered officials in Madrid. The central government has described the planned referendum as an attack on Spain’s institutional order.

ICRC issues new warning about Gaza crisis
The International Committee of the Red Cross has renewed its warning about the plight of people in the besieged Gaza strip as Israel keeps enforcing its all-out blockade on the region. At the end of a three-day trip to the Palestinian territories, the head of the ICRC Peter Maurer described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "dire", saying conditions in the coastal region are worsening by the day.
