New US nukes

The US government is reportedly considering proposing new small nuclear weapons which critics say would make the actual use of nukes more likely.

The online magazine, Politico, made the revelation, citing informed government officials. It said the low-yield nukes are among options being reviewed by a high-level panel created by President Donald Trump to assess the United States’ nuclear arsenal. The mini-nukes would mark a major policy shift from the former US administration that banned new military nuclear capabilities. The new nuclear options will be discussed during next week’s Senates debate on the National Defense Authorization Act.

Israel Lebanon violations

Israeli jets fly low over Lebanon’s south, causing at least one sonic boom that broke windows across the city of Sidon.

Residents of the Lebanese city say the overflight by the Israeli warplane caused panic among them. Israeli officials have yet to comment on the violation of the Lebanese airspace by the aircraft. Beirut says Israeli warplanes regularly breach the Lebanese airspace. They however say the jets rarely fly at such a low altitude. The latest overflight by Israeli warplanes comes a day after Lebanon said it would file an urgent complaint against Israel over its violations of the Lebanese airspace.

Irma lashes Florida

Hurricane Irma’s eyewall has slammed into the lower Keys of the US state of Florida.

Irma, which earlier strengthened back to category four, has lashed the island chain with winds of up to 210 kilometers per hour and dangerous storm surges. It’s expected to remain a powerful storm as it moves through Florida Keys and near the west coast. Irma has cut power to more than 430,000 homes and businesses in Florida. Authorities have warned some 6.4 million people to evacuate as the storm heads toward the mainland. The monster storm has already killed at least 24 people in the Caribbean.

Syrian army gains

The Syrian army has fully secured a highway linking the capital Damascus to the key eastern city of Dayr al-Zawr.

A media outlet close to the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah reported that Syrian troops and allied forces recaptured control of the final portion of the key highway near the entrance to Dayr al-Zawr. This marks the first time in years that the highway has been fully secured by government troops. The key gain by the Syrian army comes amid rapid advances against Daesh terrorists in the east of the country. Last week, the army and allied forces broke Daesh’s three-year siege of the city of Dayr al-Zawr, where nearly 100,000 civilians had been trapped since 2014.
