A railway bridge under construction collapsed in India's eastern Odisha state on Sunday, killing one person and injuring four others, police said.

One span of the flyover collapsed on Sunday afternoon, Odisha Police Commissioner Y.B. Khurania told reporters, adding that the injured were being treated in hospital.

At least another five are thought to be trapped in the debris of the bridge in the Bomikhal area of Bhubaneswar, the state capital.

Teams of rescue workers from the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority and local residents sifted through the debris, clearing beams and iron rods, as they searched for survivors. The cause of the collapse was not immediately clear.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced a payment of 500,000 rupees ($7,829) to anyone killed in the incident and free treatment for those injured, local media reported.
