An animation released by NASA shows Hurricane Irma's path across the Caribbean during the period from Monday (September 4) 1245GMT to Thursday (September 7) 1245GMT.

A second video released by NASA on Wednesday (September 6) gives a 3D view of Irma using precipitation data collected by the Global Precipitation Measurement mission, a joint NASA and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) assignment.

Hurricane Irma plowed past the Dominican Republic on Thursday after devastating a string of Caribbean islands and killing at least 11 people as one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in a century took aim at Florida.

Irma's precise course remained uncertain but it was likely to be downgraded to a Category 4 storm by the time it makes landfall in Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
