Syria’s fight against Daesh

Daesh terrorists are led a step closer to their fate in Syria as the Syrian army scores another major victory against the notorious Takfiris. Syrian troops managed to break Daesh’s years-long siege on the eastern city of Dayr al-Zawr. The victory is seen as a game changer and a major blow to the terrorists operating in the Middle East.

Egypt crackdown

An international rights organization has accused the Egyptian government of widespread torture of opposition detainees in a probable crime against humanity. Human Rights Watch has said in a report that Egyptian security forces use torture as a widespread and systematic practice inside detention facilities. The group has accused President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi of giving a green light to security officers to act with almost total impunity. The shocking report reveals that beatings, electric shocks, stress positions and sometimes rape are used to force suspects to confess or divulge information. Since the 2013 military coup, Egyptian authorities have suppressed political dissent through massive arrests, forced disappearances and death sentences.

Slamming Myanmar violence

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has condemned Myanmar's military crackdown on the minority Rohingya Muslims. Rouhani urged the international community to take action to support the Rohingya refugees. Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has also warned about the situation in Myanmar, saying Rohingya Muslims are being pushed toward starvation and ethnic cleansing. Protests have been held in many countries against the military crackdown on the minority group. Indonesian Muslims held a rally outside Myanmar’s embassy in Jakarta, demanding an end to the violence. The UN says the crisis has forced some 150-thousand people to leave their homes. The world body says Myanmar is facing a risk of ethnic cleansing.

EU refugee ruling

The European Court of Justice has rejected Hungary and Slovakia's appeal to continue to remain out of a refugee relocation scheme devised by the European Union. The court in Luxemburg says the two eastern European countries can no longer refuse to take in refugees although they have voted against the plan. The European Union introduced a quota scheme at the height of a refugee crisis two years ago. Meanwhile, a leading human rights organization has welcomed the court’s ruling. Amnesty international blames Hungary and Slovakia for trying to turn their countries into refugee-free zones.

Attack on Press TV team

Press TV's crew embedded with the Syrian army to cover Dayr Al Zawr developments got attacked by Daesh terrorists. We were earlier joined by our correspondent Mohamad Ali from the Syrian city of Dayr Al Zawr. He updated us on the situation there.

Catalonia independence

Tensions between Spain and the Catalan region have once again risen over Catalonia’s referendum law. The Spanish deputy Prime minister has taken measures to legally challenge the referendum law asking the constitutional court to block it. The measures put in place by Soraya Saenz de Santa-maria come as the Catalan region is set to vote on laws approving a referendum on splitting from Madrid following a debate by lawmakers. The region is expected to approve plans for a cessation vote on October the first.

US Aleppo airstrike

United Nations war investigators have criticized a US airstrike on a mosque in Syria’s Aleppo in March. They say the attack violated international law. The investigators say they will continue to probe additional allegations that the US coalition air raids in Raqqah have resulted in significant casualties. The US attack in Aleppo killed 38 people including children. According to the Pentagon, the air raid targeted a building next to a mosque. However, the UN says the US targeting team lacked an understanding of the actual target including the fact that it was part of a mosque where worshipers had gathered to pray. Damascus has repeatedly slammed US coalition airstrikes in Syria, describing them as breach of its sovereignty. Activists and rights groups have recently raised the alarms over the rising civilian casualties of US-led attacks in Syria and Iraq.
