Emergency workers buried 28 bodies of civilians and some suspected rebels on a hillside in Marawi City on Tuesday (August 5) as troops continued to battle Daesh terrorists in the southern Philippines.

Provincial crisis management committee rescue officer Saripada Pacasum said around 88 bodies in total have been buried in mass graves since June and was expecting more as the firefight continues. He also said some families were looking for missing family members but refused to identify bodies in fear of finding them dead.

More than 800 people have been killed, most of them insurgents, since May 23 when the militants occupied large parts of the predominantly Muslim town.

The fighting is the biggest security challenge in years for the mostly Catholic Philippines, even though it has a long history of Muslim separatist rebellion in Mindanao, an island of 22 million people that has been placed under martial law until the end of the year.
