Rafael Nadal has defeated Serbian Dusan Lajovich 7-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round of the US Open.
After a poor start, world number 1 fought back from 3-5 down and clinched the opener in the tie-break by 8 points to 6. The remaining two sets were far less competitive, as the Spaniard finally found his rhythm and dominated the game.
Nadal closed out the second set 6-2 with an ace, and there was no way back for Lajovich as Nadal forged ahead to wrap up the win 6-2 in the third after 2 hours and 16 minutes on court. This confidence-boosting first-round win now sets Nadal on the way to a potential 16th Grand Slam title.
